Drs. Brigman and Webb work with school districts to
provide training in the SSS model for school counselors. If your district
or school is interested we will share templates for grants and information
about how to access current federal, state and local funding streams tied
to improving student academic and social competence.
Four randomized comparison group studies investigating the
impact of the SSS curriculum have been completed. All four studies showed
marked improvement in student standardized test scores in math and reading
as well as in classroom behavior. The school counselors participating in
all four studies received training to insure that they could implement the
SSS program as designed.
School counselors may implement the SSS curriculum without
the training. However, since no studies have been done without training,
we are not sure about the results. We are confident that with the SSS
training counselors can expect a success rate of between 70-86% (this was
the range of the percent of students showing improvement in test scores
across all four studies). The reasons for this confidence are explained
below.
The four SSS studies included training for participating
school counselors that focused upon three main ingredients related to
implementing the SSS curriculum: Topics, Skills and Format.
The Topics refer to three skill areas that emerge from the
research literature on successful students. These three skills are
cognitive skills, social skills, and self-management skills. The group
and classroom guidance curriculums focus upon these critically important
topics.
The Skills refer to ten skills considered crucial to
effective group leadership and classroom guidance. First, these skills
are demonstrated by the trainers. Next, participants practice using the
skills, and last, they receive structured feedback using a “Counselor Peer
Coaching” model developed at FAU.
The Format refers to a structured format for each group and
classroom lesson. A series of key strategies for the Beginning, Middle
and End of each lesson have been developed to facilitate delivery of the
SSS curriculum.
It is the combination of these three components, TOPICS,
SKILLS, FORMAT, that give school counselors a high degree of confidence in
implementing the SSS program.
The training emphasizes practice with the SSS curriculum, the
structured format and the key skills for leading groups and classroom
lessons. The curriculum includes specific models for helping students
develop cognitive, social and self-management skills.
