Do you remember when...?

  • Parents felt like they could contribute to their child's education?

  • Teachers felt that they had a partner in their students' parents to achieve their educational goals?

  • Children received clear messages both at school and at home about how to succeed?

Today it seems that...

  • Parents are overwhelmed by life's stresses and don't have the time they want to take a more active role in their child's education.

  • Teachers are overwhelmed and feel that they are often unfairly blamed for the lack of student progress.

  • Children are finding it more difficult to develop the basic tools need to succeed.

Parent Success Skills Can Help!

The Parent Success Skills (PSS) is now available. PSS is designed to support students who receive the Student Success Skills Program (grades 4-10) or the Ready for Success (grades 2-3) program.

Parent support for core learning principles and strategies and parent involvement in the learning process is critically important (Moll, 1990). Parent involvement can affect classroom and school climates in addition to providing support for individual students (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000). The National Standards for Parent Involvement (National Parent Teacher Association, 1998) have been used as a guide in the development of PSS.

While comprehensive parenting programs have been developed in the past, none have been developed whose primary focus is to support student success skills being simultaneously taught in school. It is our contention that by teaching parents basic principles for successful parenting (e.g. collaborative problem solving, encouragement, logical consequences) in the context of supporting student success skills development, achievement outcomes will be further enhanced. The PSS program in not intended to teach parents how to teach reading or math but how to use key strategies introduced through the Student Success Skills or Ready for Success Programs to help students become more successful.

The PSS program includes a trainer manual with CD that contains four 1 1/2 hour parent workshop PowerPoint presentations. The four parent workshops are designed to build upon one another and are also built to stand along. Therefore a parent may choose to attend only one or all four.

The PSS program is published by Atlantic Education Consultants, Boca Raton, FL.
